Working with the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and as President of the Pensacola Council of Ministers, Rev. Matthews was jailed 35 times in his efforts to bring civil rights to Florida. He is now a pastor and presiding elder at Zion Fountain AME Church in Brewton.
